The Thread That Runs So True A Mountain School Teacher Tells His Story Jesse Stuart Books

Every teacher and every prospective teacher should read this wonderful book. It is an amazing account of a country boy with a deep thirst for education finding his niche in the world. Jesse was well-educated in the ways of farming and the ways of knowing nature there in the Kentucky hills, but his father agreed that Jesse needed a real education. And Jesse used that education to help other young hill country folks see the need of education, also. It is an inspiring account of the ways Jesse found to inspire and challenge his back-country students and how they rewarded his efforts beyond belief.

The Thread That Runs So True A Mountain School Teacher Tells His Story Jesse Stuart Books Reviews

Loved this book! I recommend that everyone read it! It contains a wealth of knowledge and information about life as few have known it. It is a true story and an easy read. So happy l found it!
This book chronicles the author's teaching career in the hills of Kentucky during the 1920s. It is well written, beautifully set, with perfectly developed characters. I loved the book and the writing style. I will definitely read more by this author. This is a gem.
I DO happen to have a first edition autographed copy given to me as a gift which I cherish. I have loved this book so much, I could read it yearly. I've had difficulties finding it through the years to give to colleagues and beginning teachers. This book should be required reading for all new teachers. Jesse Stuart was light years ahead of his time. He was a dedicated, committed, and passionate teacher. When the students weren't "getting" the math lesson, he looked around the room, noticed the Farm Bureau calendar on the wall, took it down and cut out the numbers for the students to have concrete manipulatives. Decades later, publishing companies are selling concrete manipulative for students to learn math. One of the other reviews stated "he wasn't a good writer." He was a teacher, writing his story. I am a National Board Certified teacher of writing and I would love to see more teachers write their story.
I first read this book when I was a freshman in high school, and fell in love with Jesse Stuart's writing. Since then I have read many of his books, and have never been disappointed. The Thread That Runs So True is a wonderful story which I've read several times over the years. It speaks of simpler times -- days I wish I could visit again. In my opinion, Jesse Stuart is one of the all time best!
Read this book many years ago when I lived in Nashville near Vanderbilt University. Jesse Stuart was an illustrious Vandy alum, and had some affiliation with the famous group of writers there known as the Fugitives. The Thread That Runs So True is extremely well-written and many people will probably--like me--read it cover to cover at one sitting. I have used this book as a gift to many of my teacher friends through the years. It is both thought provoking and inspiring.
An excellent book I read fifty years ago, then taught 30 years ago. Reading it again after watching "The Waltons" on television proved quite synergistic, with plenty of down-to-earth American values on parade. Stuart's prose is quite poetic and his life a tapestry of hard work, perseverance, passion, and great idealism, a must-read for anyone who cares about teaching, learning or civilization.
An interesting story about Kentucky one-room school houses and small town school systems in the late 1940's. The author chose a way of life that he adored and motivated many others to follow in his path. My copy is the 32nd printing of the book so I believe many others have found it interesting. Having taught in small towns I can relate to some of his problems and some of his solutions, some of which would land him in jail today. I enjoyed it a lot and would have given it five stars if it had a better beginning. Once into the book it is great reading.
