Somehow, my first one got misplaced and I always wanted another when I saw this at an unbelievable price.

Many years ago someone gave me this edition as a present. It has glorified my shelf, but not my mind, since. However, that was an error on my part. Recently it has come off the shelf and I've discovered what might be my best (most accessible) overall history of western civilization. Discussions in the book do not reflect only on art, but rather also on the spirit of the evolving times. Very insightful. Very interesting.

I don't know what the latest edition is like, but this older edition still tells a great story and represents a great value.

Detailed biographies of the respective artists have also been incorporated into the text which reads very fluidly.

H. W. Janson (1913 - 1982) first published "History of Art" in 1962 - it has sold over two million copies in various languages. Janson was born in St. Petersburg. Following the early phases of the 1917 Russian Revolution his family moved to Finland and then to Hamburg where Janson ultimately attended and graduated from the Wilhelms Gymnasium. He subsequently studied art history at the University of Hamburg. In 1935 Janson immigrated to the United States where he completed a PhD at Harvard University in 1942.

Co-author Anthony F. Janson also wrote History of Art for Young People (Trade Version) (6th Edition).

In summary, one could hardly find a more inclusive or authoritative text on art history and I found this work to be as impressive in design and layout as it is informative.

This is a really beautiful book. Many many pictures of works. I bought it to start off some personal education for art, and this is the one book that I need.
I still have not received this item. It's been quite some time now. But this book is amazing! A basic for any lover of art.

Perfect book, ton's of pictures and short synopsis of each with author insight. Just what I wanted. beautiful pages and prints. Definitely worth owning. great for the coffee table.
Just like I remember. The only reason I did not buy the current edition besides the expense was I have Volume II. Now I own the set. Originally, I had to sell Volume I to buy Volume II. It took no time at all to arrive. Thank you.
